#PLUSMALEFASHION Catching Up With Francis

chatted with one of the most stylish guy’s on Instagram, Francis Lee Baker. He’s been featured on the Plus Male Fashion Instagram Page weekly, showing off his very unique style. I decided I should feature him on the blog because he’s really a staple in the Plus Male Fashion Revolution!

Scroll below and get to know Francis a little more.

Where are you from? and Where do you currently reside?

Francis:  I was born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky and that’s where we’re I’m currently living.

How is the fashion scene in Kentucky? What are some things that are unique to Kentucky fashion?

Francis: Kentucky’s fashion scene is behind, but slowly progressing. Most clothing store’s are owned by chain retailers so we mostly have access to staple pieces and watered down versions of fashion trends. Kentucky’s kind of southern, so a lot of people dress preppy. I’d say wearing bright colors or pastels year-round are pretty unique to Kentucky.

I love your style, I think it’s very unique, but yet still trendy, where do you get your inspiration from for your style day to day?

Francis:   When I go to the mall or shop online, I try to pick things that are inspired by things I’ve seen in magazines and on blogs. My main styles influences are GQ Magazine, Mr Porter, and Men’s Style Pro.

When did you start to take interest in fashion and style?

Francis: I’ve always loved clothes. I remember for my 13th birthday, I made my mom buy me this FUBU X Fat Albert velour sweat suit and I thought I was killing the game. I didn’t develop good taste until high school. I had a dress code in middle school, so I was allowed to finally experiment in high school. I found a copy of Details magazine at my uncle’s house and that’s when I started to learn about fashion and make more tasteful style choices.

Do you find it difficult being able to shop and pick out your clothes based on your body type?

Francis: It used to be difficult finding stylish clothes that fit. I’d have to order online, because the mall never carried my size. That was one of the things that pushed me to lose weight. I was about 40 pounds heavier than I am now during the beginning of college. Ironically, shopping hasn’t gotten easier after losing weight. My style has gotten pickier, so I still have to shop online instead of the mall to find what I’m looking for.

As I stated previously I think you have great style, did you ever consider being a stylist or personal shopper?

Francis: I would love to be a personal stylist! There just aren’t many opportunities for it in Kentucky. But I love researching past and present fashion trends to pick out clothes! One of these days, I hope to make living as a stylist.

How do you feel about the state of Plus Size/Big and Tall Male Fashion Scene and where it’s going?

Francis: I think it’s awesome that we’re encouraging people to love their bodies! At the same time, I still feel self-conscious because plus size models look so toned. I saw a campaign with a shirtless plus-size model and it made me feel like I needed to go to the gym to work on my love handles and man boobs. I’d like to see the industry encourage people to love their bodies inside and out. Most people want to lose weight to look attractive, but it should be more about your health.

What can we expect to see from Francis in the future?

Francis: I’m not completely sure what my plan is for the future. I feel like every time I come up with something, God takes me in a better direction. I will say that I plan to get more personal. I love to cook and I also sing. I’ve started weightlifting and eating cleaner. I’ve also never been in a relationship. I just to want share more about myself and how am I navigating my 20’s. My end goal is inspire myself and other men to be confident and know that you can be sexy even though you’re a bigger guy.
